Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober.

A rare and highly charged ritual has once again thrust the Temple Mount conversation into the global spotlight. A video released by Adam King shows a kohen preparing water mixed with ashes claimed to come from a red heifer—an act required by the Torah before anyone may enter the Temple precincts. What some describe as a practical step toward restoring biblical commandments, others insist crosses halachic lines that render the entire process invalid. At the center of the storm is whether ashes from a controversial “practice burning” can legitimately be used for one of the most exacting purity laws in Scripture.
The dispute exposes how close—and how divided—Temple-focused efforts have become. Some rabbis argue that where legitimate halachic opinions allow a commandment to be fulfilled, excessive stringency that prevents action undermines the Torah’s intent. Others, including the Temple Institute, firmly reject the ashes, citing violations involving location, the purity of the officiating priest, and even uncertainty over which animal was burned. The result is a sharp fault line between those urging careful preparation through practice and those insisting that anything less than full compliance disqualifies the ritual entirely.
