Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober.

The World Economic Forum (WEF), in collaboration with the United Arab Emirates, has launched the Global Regulatory Innovation Platform (GRIP), a two-year initiative aimed at shaping global regulations for emerging technologies like artificial intelligence and quantum computing. Framed as a way to help governments stay ahead of technological innovation, GRIP includes deliverables such as a Global Regulatory Playbook and a Regulatory Future Readiness Index. While these tools promise agility and collaboration, critics are wary that GRIP will enable the WEF to exert undue influence over how nations develop their tech governance, mirroring its history of promoting top-down control, especially in the realm of digital content and online speech.
Concerns have been raised about the WEF’s growing role in embedding centralized regulatory frameworks that often sideline civil liberties and free expression. With the UAE—a nation known for its tight control over speech—as a model partner, GRIP’s approach may favor streamlined, corporate-friendly regulations over transparent, democratic processes. Observers warn that this initiative could become a soft-power tool for influencing global policy without public debate, especially as the WEF brings in major corporate players like Boston Consulting Group to guide the effort. While GRIP emphasizes innovation and progress, the lack of meaningful scrutiny around privacy, algorithmic bias, and digital rights raises red flags about the true cost of such regulatory “agility.”
