When Church Becomes a Stage, Not a Sanctuary

Jul 25, 2025

In the modern push to appear relevant, many churches have exchanged reverence for performance. Sacred spaces once devoted to worship and repentance have been transformed into flashy stages, complete with fog machines, pop culture references, and entertainment gimmicks. Churches like Church by the Glades in Florida or Life.Church in Oklahoma exemplify this shift—swapping Scripture for spectacle. Their services now resemble concerts or theme park attractions more than gatherings of believers devoted to Christ. From Backstreet Boys and Kendrick Lamar renditions to Jurassic Park-themed sermons, the gospel has been diluted into a stage show designed to impress rather than convict. And while these stunts may fill seats, they fall short of making true disciples.

The early church grew not because it mimicked culture, but because it stood apart from it—boldly proclaiming truth, even at great cost. Today’s seeker-sensitive movement confuses popularity with spiritual power, creating fans rather than followers. When worship is reduced to Beatles tributes and Jurassic Park sets, we trade holiness for hype. The cross loses its weight when it’s overshadowed by light shows and punchlines. Yet, in a world saturated with entertainment, what people are starving for is authenticity—truth that transforms, not just entertains. The Church must return to the altar, where Christ is central, the gospel is uncompromised, and worship remains holy. The world needs less showmanship and more sanctification. It’s time to stop trying to entertain people into the kingdom and start preaching them there.
