When Governance Becomes a Stage Show

Jun 24, 2025

When lawmakers abandon decorum for displays, the integrity of governance crumbles—and that moment came into full view on the floor of Oregon’s House of Representatives. What should have been a solemn space for deliberation and lawmaking instead became a venue for a flamboyant drag show, complete with lip-syncing, pride flags, and thunderous applause from Democrat lawmakers. The performance, organized by Rep. Travis Nelson to celebrate the Black drag community, was hailed as "incredible" by supporters and praised in glowing terms by local media. But the spectacle was not a celebration of diversity—it was a display of decadence dressed in the language of progress. Legislative halls are not nightclubs, and elected officials are not culture critics. They are stewards of the public trust, and last week, that trust was traded for applause and ideology.

This incident is more than just poor judgment—it is a symptom of a growing sickness in American political life. The Oregon House floor was transformed from a chamber of deliberation into a stage for activism, exposing a deeper trend infecting our institutions. As Republican Leader Christine Drazan rightly pointed out, the chamber resembled a “smokey bar,” not a seat of democratic authority. Across the country, schools, courts, and capitols are being overtaken by cultural performance and identity politics. The erosion of dignity in public office has made room for theater to replace truth and provocation to supplant principle. The Oregon drag show isn’t merely inappropriate—it is a flashing red light on the dashboard of our republic, warning us what happens when governance gives way to spectacle. If we don’t reclaim reverence for leadership and insist on sobriety in service, the people’s house will be little more than a stage—and the republic it was built to serve, just another fading backdrop.
