The White House has unveiled its first-ever national artificial intelligence policy framework, outlining a sweeping plan to regulate AI across the United States. The proposal covers key areas such as child safety, copyright, workforce development, and free speech—but its most significant feature is a call for federal control over AI regulation, effectively preventing individual states from creating their own rules. By declaring AI an “inherently interstate phenomenon,” the administration is seeking to centralize authority in Washington, signaling a major shift toward unified national oversight of rapidly advancing technology.
The framework emphasizes innovation while avoiding the creation of new regulatory agencies, instead proposing “regulatory sandboxes” where companies can develop AI under relaxed oversight. At the same time, debates are intensifying in Congress, with competing proposals calling for stricter safeguards, including penalties for misuse and stronger protections for users. As AI becomes deeply integrated into everyday life—from business operations to personal interactions—the question is no longer whether it should be regulated, but who controls the rules governing its use.
