World ID Expands Biometric Identity Checks

Apr 21, 2026

Sam Altman’s World ID project is rapidly expanding biometric identity verification through iris scanning technology, moving deeper into mainstream online and offline services. The initiative recently launched its standalone World ID app, allowing users to verify identity across platforms, manage credentials, and control how their digital identity is used. Backers say more than 18 million people across 160 countries have already been verified using Orb devices that scan a person’s iris to generate a unique identifier.

The system is now being integrated into major platforms including Zoom, DocuSign, Tinder, and Okta. Verified users may receive badges, easier access, special features, or priority treatment. World ID is also being linked to advertising models, ticket sales, banking, travel, and government services. Critics note that unlike passwords, biometric identifiers cannot be changed if compromised, raising concerns over privacy and long-term control.

This expansion reflects a future where identity, access, commerce, and participation become increasingly tied to centralized digital verification systems. What begins as convenience or fraud prevention can quickly evolve into a framework where privileges depend on compliance and biometric enrollment. As more areas of life merge into one persistent identity layer, the world moves closer to an era of surveillance, restricted access, and unprecedented control over buying, selling, and daily participation.
