Scientists in Singapore have unveiled a biological data center prototype that uses approximately 16 million living human neurons to process information, marking a remarkable new frontier in computing. The project brings together Australia's Cortical Labs, Singapore-based data center company DayOne, and the National University of Singapore. Rather than relying entirely on conventional silicon processors, the facility incorporates 20 CL1 biological computing units, each containing roughly 800,000 lab-grown human neurons connected to silicon hardware. The neurons can receive electrical signals, respond to information, adapt through experience, and alter their connections—a biological form of learning researchers hope could eventually perform certain computational tasks far more efficiently than conventional machines.
The technology is particularly attractive because the human brain accomplishes extraordinary computational tasks while consuming a fraction of the energy required by today's massive AI infrastructure. Researchers hope biological computing could eventually assist in areas including drug discovery, neurological research, humanoid robotics, cybersecurity, and fraud detection. Cortical Labs has already demonstrated neuron-based systems capable of interacting with video games, while related research has explored using living neurons for predictive computational tasks. The Singapore prototype represents an important transition from isolated laboratory experiments toward an actual biological computing infrastructure that developers hope can eventually be scaled commercially. In other words, humanity is beginning to blur a boundary that once appeared immovable: the separation between computer hardware and living human biology.
