Keep Watch!
Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober.

Brandon Lake’s music has tugged on the strings of many hearts, but his recent comments about making worship more accessible for unchurched visitors—such as the hypothetical “Bubba” dragged to church by his wife—spark a deeper concern. In a podcast, Lake suggested toning down worship to make it less intimidating for outsiders, perhaps swapping the language of “holy” and “hallelujah” for something more like Coldplay. While the desire to reach people is understandable, it raises the question: Are we diluting what is sacred in an attempt to be relatable? Worship, at its core, isn’t a tool for outreach—it is a sacred act of adoration directed toward God, not a performance designed to put visitors at ease. Church isn't meant to reflect culture, but to be a striking contrast to it—a place where God is central, not man.
This isn’t a new debate. For decades, churches have tried to become more “seeker-sensitive,” downplaying theological depth to increase appeal. But the result has often been a shallow experience that fails to challenge or transform. Men like “Bubba” don’t need catchy hooks or softened truths—they need to encounter the holiness of God. Real transformation doesn’t come from relevance but from reverence. Emotional expression has its place, but worship is about declaring eternal truths, not crafting emotional highs. The church must not trade conviction for comfort. Visitors should feel welcomed, yes—but not coddled. They should be drawn not by how normal we’ve made God, but by how glorious and awe-inspiring He truly is. Let worship remain sacred. Let the church sound like heaven.
Stay Awake. Keep Watch.
