Worst Wheat Crop Since 1972

May 21, 2026

Kansas wheat farmers are sounding the alarm after a devastating combination of drought, extreme temperatures, crop disease, and soaring operational costs pushed this year’s harvest toward what could become the worst wheat production season in America since 1972. Farmers across the Plains are watching once-promising fields wither under relentless weather extremes as wheat streak mosaic virus and barley yellow dwarf virus spread more aggressively through weakened crops. The U.S. Department of Agriculture now estimates total wheat production will fall to just 1.56 billion bushels, down 21% from last year, with more than half of Kansas’ wheat crop rated “poor” or “very poor.”

Veteran Kansas farmer Orville Williams, who has farmed wheat successfully for decades, described the situation as unlike anything he has seen in years. Irrigated fields that once produced nearly 100 bushels per acre may now yield only a fraction of that, while dryland fields are struggling even more severely. At the same time, rising costs for diesel fuel, fertilizer, and tariffs are adding financial pressure to an already battered agricultural industry. Many farmers are now relying on crop insurance, cutting expenses, and preparing for significant financial losses as uncertainty grows over future harvests and food supply stability.
