Xi, Putin, Kim Chat on Living to 150 Years

Sep 4, 2025

In a rare unscripted moment, Chinese President Xi Jinping was caught on a hot mic discussing human longevity with Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un during a military parade in Beijing. The exchange, captured as the three leaders ascended Tiananmen Gate for a ceremony marking the 80th anniversary of Japan’s defeat in World War II, touched on the idea of people living to 150 years old. Snippets of the audio revealed Xi remarking that in the past, reaching 70 was rare, but today 70 is “still a child.” Putin then appeared to reference advances in biotechnology, with a translator relaying comments about organ transplants and even the potential for “achieving immortality.” Xi added that predictions suggest lifespans of up to 150 years could be possible within this century.

The candid conversation came just moments before Xi delivered a speech commemorating China’s wartime victory, followed by a showcase of military strength. The exchange drew attention not only for its unusual subject matter but also for its spontaneity, as such informal moments are uncommon in China’s tightly controlled political stagecraft. Age and succession are pressing issues for all three leaders: Xi and Putin, both 72, have extended their rule through constitutional changes, while Kim, 41, has fueled speculation about grooming his daughter as a successor. The brief hot-mic incident offered a rare glimpse into the personal concerns and musings of leaders who dominate global geopolitics, underscoring how questions of longevity and mortality resonate even at the highest levels of power.
