A growing number of people are turning to generative AI chatbots like ChatGPT for their daily news, according to a newly released report from the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism. Published Tuesday, the annual survey revealed that, for the first time, a significant portion of the public is using AI tools to access headlines and updates. The report, conducted by YouGov and involving 97,000 participants across 48 countries, is widely regarded as a key resource in tracking global media trends. While only 7% of respondents overall said they use AI to find news, the number rises to 12% among those under 35 and 15% among those under 25.
ChatGPT emerged as the most widely used chatbot for news, followed by Google’s Gemini and Meta’s Llama. Younger users especially appreciated the personalized and relevant content generated by these tools. Beyond just news updates, many individuals used AI to summarize (27%), translate (24%), or recommend (21%) articles. Nearly one in five also turned to chatbots with specific questions about current events, highlighting the growing role of AI not only as an information source but as an interactive tool for digesting and understanding the news.
