A startling new study from Germany's Karlsruhe Institute of Technology suggests that ordinary household Wi-Fi routers may be capable of doing far more than providing internet access. Researchers discovered that modern routers using beamforming technology can effectively map and identify individuals based on how their bodies interact with radio signals. By combining this data with machine learning algorithms, the research team achieved an astonishing 99.5 percent accuracy rate when identifying participants, all without the use of cameras, wearable devices, or direct physical contact.
The technology works by analyzing subtle distortions in wireless signals as they bounce off people, walls, furniture, and other objects. Researchers found that the feedback data used by routers to optimize signal strength can inadvertently reveal unique physical characteristics of individuals. Even more concerning, the study found that this information is generally unencrypted and can potentially be accessed without connecting directly to the router itself. Scientists noted that the technology can function through walls and in situations where the subject is not in direct line of sight, effectively transforming common Wi-Fi infrastructure into a sophisticated sensing network.
