YouTube announced it will begin using artificial intelligence to estimate the ages of U.S. users, aiming to strengthen protections for minors on its platform. Starting August 13, the system will analyze various user behaviors—such as search history, content preferences, and account age—to determine if a viewer is likely under 18. If so, YouTube will automatically apply teen account safeguards, regardless of the birthdate provided during account setup. These protections include non-personalized ads, reminders to take breaks, limited recommendations for repetitive or sensitive content, and enhanced privacy features. The rollout will begin with a small group of users and may expand nationally over time.

This move comes amid growing legislative pressure in the U.S. and abroad to enforce stricter age-verification measures on digital platforms, especially to protect children from exposure to harmful material, including pornography. If the AI system misidentifies a user’s age, they will be able to verify it through a government ID, credit card, or a selfie. YouTube acknowledged that some content creators may see changes in their teenage audience and a potential dip in ad revenue but expects minimal disruption for most. This new initiative is part of a broader strategy, previously outlined by YouTube CEO Neal Mohan, to increase the use of AI for safety, translation, and content optimization across the platform. The company says it will continue to monitor the system’s performance before expanding its use.
